Kakawis Family Development Centre

The Centre

The Cabins
Each family stays in individual family units. Each unit has a living space, kitchen and bedroom(s). The kitchen comes equipped with pots and pans, dishes and utensils etc.

The Social Centre
The Social Centre is a large buiding where the counselling and workshops take place. Friday video night and Saturday potluck for all families.

The Learning Centre
The Learning Centre is a large unit where youth and teens do counselling, workshops, school work and crafts.

The Toddler Centre
This place is for children to have play time and nap time. Newborns and children up to age five can play inside doing arts and crafts and games or at our outdoor playground equipped with a slide and swings.

The Gym
There is a large gym perfect for a game of basketball or volleyball.

Regularly Scheduled Events and Gatherings

The Sweat Lodge
There are male, female, youth and family sweats throughout the session.

Movie Night
Friday is our scheduled movie night at the Social Centre. We have a selection of videos to choose from so please do not bring your own.

Pot Luck
All the families gather once a week to celebrate and eat together.

AA Meetings
Meetings are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are held on site during session times.

Co-op Grocery Shopping
Saturday is shopping day in Tofino.

Closing Ceremony
Our celebration of completion is held on the second last day or the last day of the session. Clients are notified which day ahead of time. Guests are encouraged to attend.

General Information

Telephone
Kakawis has a pay phone that all clients may use (please bring calling cards or quarters). The pay phone will be turned off for the first two weeks of the session. After the first two weeks, the pay phone will be turned on daily after 4:00 pm ONLY.

Children
Parent(s) are responsible for the care and behaviour of their children at all times when they are not in session.

Smoking
All buildings at Kakawis are smoke-free. Please smoke outside away from the doorways of buildings. Cans are provided for your cigarette butts. Please be mindful of fires during the dry summer months.

Medical Appointments
All appointments are to be arranged through your counsellor.

Participation
All family members must participate in all sessions, activities. Also, clients must be respectful and be on time for all sessions and activities.
